Lina is the founder of @shefighter , one of the first self-defense schools for women in the Arab world. I met her at her studio, in Amman, Jordan, last year. As a girl, Lina was often bullied by boys because she tried to compete with them. At 14 she started studying Taekwondo, earned a black belt, and competed successfully until her knee blew out. Doctors advised her to find another career. Instead, she chose to spread the word about the practice she loved, empowering women through strength, skill, and confidence. In this way she changed the lives of many of her students who faced street harassment or violence in their own homes. Her courses begun in her parents’ basement 7 years ago, but in the meantime the school grew amazingly and Lina trained thousands of women around Middle East. She says she is often asked by husbands, “Are you going to teach our wives to beat us up? No, I am going to teach your wife to defend herself from violence.” #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Jordan #Selfdefense

Today is the International Day of the Girl Child. A moment to think about the inequality of our world. There are many places on earth where giving birth to a girl is seen as bad luck. Or places where little girls suffer genital mutilation, they are forced to marry at an early age or don’t have access to education. And sometimes these are not exceptions, but norms. I met this young Yazidi girl from Syria in a refugee camp from the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. Hasa was feeling fortunate that she’s alive and has the chance to study. Unfortunately she lost six of her small cousins when Isis attacked her village in Syria. In many parts of the word life is so cruel and unfair. I just hope the girls and boys of today will make tomorrow the world a better place for everyone. It’s us who have to educate them in this spirit.

I met this lovely lady a few months ago in a picturesque Iranian village called Abyaneh. Traveling a few months ago in Brazil was a real life lesson for me. This incredible country has much poverty, violence, and suffering, but it doesn’t forget to smile, to dance, to be kind and warm-hearted, even in the most difficult moments, like the economic crisis that followed the boom years. Suelem was born in a Rio de Janeiro favela, then sent to live with her aunt in São Paulo to escape the poverty. She moved back in Rio and now works hard seven days a week in an accessories shop hoping for a better future. For more portraits and stories please order The Atlas of Beauty book. For any book the first days of life are decisive so I would be very grateful if you decide to order today. Link in bio.

While traveling in India, almost two years ago, I noticed that trains are the country’s vital circulatory system. They transport more than twenty million people every day. Just imagine twenty million fascinating stories! I wanted to hear hers but the train left after a few seconds from Jodhpur Station. But in The Atlas of Beauty Book, besides 500 portraits, you will find stories from all over the world. The book will be out in the world in just two days and I’m so happy you will hold in your hands very soon. #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #India

Tutku is from Istanbul, Turkey. She experienced many heart breaking moments in her life, but her positive spirit always gave her the strength to move forward. Her mother had several miscarriages before giving birth to her. When she was a child, her father paralysed and Tutku had to start working for a living at an early age. Her determination paid off and a few years ago she became a chef. But again life hit her hard. One day Tutku totally lost her hearing. She went to many doctors but her case seemed hopeless. “Once, I was staying on my balcony. And I closed my eyes and said to myself: If, when I will open my eyes, I will see at least a bird on the sky that means I will hear again. I was afraid to open my teary eyes and I stayed a long time like that. When I finally had the courage to look on the sky, I saw two birds.” After a while Tutku received an innovative implant that provides a sense of sound. Now she can work again, as a chef, but her hearing is still weak and that’s a huge challenge in a busy restaurant. But Tutku didn’t complain, when we met. In the contrary: She was grateful for every second of her new life. #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Turkey

I noticed these lovely ladies today in Brasov Train Station, Romania. They met during a pilgrimage a while ago and they remained good friends. They love to travel and today they were coming from a monastery. Some of them have been to distant parts of the world, like Australia, South Africa or the United States to visit their children who moved abroad. After I showed them The Atlas of Beauty book, one of them smiled and told the others: “All people of the world should love each other.” This is the spirit of the book and I couldn’t have said it better. Just eleven days until you can hold it in your hands. If you want to pre-order it and support the continuation of the project please follow the link in bio.

Tomorrow many people around the world celebrate Easter. Last year I traveled around Greece, for this beautiful festival, and I discovered many communities where people preserve fascinating traditions. She’s Eleni, from Delphi, and although she wears modern clothes in a normal day, I had the chance to meet her during last Easter. #TheAtlasofBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Greece

Eleonora is from Saint Petersburg, Russia, where I met her last year. She studies ballet at Vaganova Academy, among the world’s most prestigious. Her extreme effort and willingness to forego free time is not typical for an adolescent. But when she dances, she soars. Her colleagues and professors told me she is considered the best in the school and could someday be among the top ballerinas of her time. But Eleonora is too modest to agree with them. “I don’t want to think about how good I am. In ballet, everything is so fragile. A simple injury can end your career in a second.” #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Russia
